Critical analysis of Juvenile's "Back That Azz Up"

A serious breakdown and analysis of the meaning and symbolism behind Juvenile's hit hip-hop song "Back That Azz Up"

by supz

(Juvenile)
Got you working with some ass, yeah
You bad, yeah
Make a nigga spend his cash, yeah
His last, yeah

Juvenile obviously has some self esteem issues, as he feels he can only get "some ass" by "spending his cash"

Hoes clown when you pass, yeah
They mad, yeah
You gon' ride in the Jag, yeah
With dad, yeah

He clearly feels it is his duty to reassure the woman that she is above the "hoes" and that she will be "riding" with him. Again, he must accentuate the shortcomings of this "hoe", as to detract from his own.

You could smoke or buy a bag, yeah
A grass, yeah
Got money I confess, yeah
And trash, yeah

Juvenile feels that through the use of drugs, and fragrantly flaunting around his money, he can woo this "hoe" he has his eyes on.

I'm a Big Tymer nigga, yeah
Pulling trigger, yeah
A player hater to flip with, yeah
Gon' head and fill it, yeah

He is insecure about his own masculinity, therefore he feels it is necessary to kill other "players" to reaffirm his sense of "Big Tymer"-ness

I be slanging wood, yeah
Out the hood, yeah
Let it be understood, yeah
It's all good, yeah
Got a nigga screaming large, yeah
On the hard, yeah
A smooth ghetto broad, yeah
I want the broad, yeah
A nigga do a trick, yeah
On the dick, yeah

This is an blatant attempt at self gratification. Juvenile lacks confidence about the size of his "wood" or "dick" and proclaims to the world that it is indeed "Out the hood" and "nigga's" are screaming about how large it is.

You claiming you want a bitch, yeah
That ain't shit, yeah
The nigga with the money, yeah
Don't act funny, yeah
Got birds and I'm running, yeah
'Bout a hundred, yeah

If a "nigga ain't got money", Juvenile feels that "nigga" can't get a "bitch"

(Chorus)
Girl, you looks good, won't you back that ass up
You'se a fine motherfucker, won't you back that ass up

He politely requests that the girl back her ass up, as he thinks she's a "fine motherfucker"

Call me big daddy when you back that ass up
Hoe, who is you playing with
Back that ass up

To make himself feel in a role of power, he asks that she call him "Big Daddy" as she backs her ass up. Note that he assumes from the previous two lines that she will indeed be backing her ass up for him, even though she has not attested her consent. Furthermore, he shows a blatant disregard for this girl's emotions, as he addresses her as "hoe" and questions who she is playing with, probably waiting for her to call him "Big Daddy"

Girl, you looks good, won't you back that ass up
You'se a fine motherfucker, won't you back that ass up
Call me big daddy when you back that ass up
Girl, who is you playing with
Back that ass up
Girl, you looks good, won't you back that ass up
You'se a fine motherfucker, won't you back that ass up

(Juvenile)
You got to steel, big ass, yeah
Make me laugh, yeah

This last couplet is rather incoherent. There are two possibilities on what it could mean: (1) The girl has a "steel" ass; it is hard, implying that she works out often and cares about her bodily appearance, however for Juvenile this is not enough, and he laughs at her attempt to improve her self image. (2) Perhaps Juvenile believes the girl has stolen her ass from another "fine hoe", and he thinks it is comical that she would go to such lengths to improve her rear end.

Make a nigga wanna grab that
Wanna grab that

Even though he laughs at the appearance of her ass, he still wants to grab it. From previous lines of this song, you would think Juvenile has higher standards, yet he still knows deep down inside that he cannot get anything better than this so-called "hoe" who is obviously more of a man than he will ever be.

I'm sweating on the draws, yeah
On hard, yeah
Wanna walk it like a dog, yeah
Break you off, yeah

Again, Juvenile comments on the size of his gigantic African American penis. Even though statistically the penii of African Americans are larger, I believe that all the evidence presented so far would lead one to believe that Juvenile has a smaller-than-average penis and continually needs to reassure himself that it is not small.

Get, how you gon' yours, yeah
That's for sure, yeah

I have no clue what he meant by this, but my best guess is that he is inviting this "hoe" to get comfortable and prepare for a night of "riding" him. Has she yet shown any consent?

You fucking with my nerves, yeah
To the curb, yeah
I know you bitches know, yeah
And it show, yeah

He believes this girl is teasing him, and if she is he, will throw her to the proverbial curb. This would suggest that he is still unsure as to whether or not this "hoe" will get with him, yet in the next line suggests his knowledge of "bitches" is obvious. Juvenile has an obvious fear of rejection and his solution is to constantly reaffirm himself of his "John Blaze". And once more, Juvenile is treating women as objects and not as human beings.

But a nigga got some more, yeah
I'm 'bout to flow, yeah
Fresh off some shit, yeah
In his bitch, yeah

Because of an obvious lack of poetic expression, Juvenile uses graphic terms to explain that he can ejaculate many times, and even goes so far as to warn the "hoe" that he is about to "flow" once more. Again, Juvenile returns to self-gratification to boost his self-image - He "flows" so much that people need to be warned of it.

We be making hit, yeah
After hit, yeah

Apparently he is reaching his sexual peak over and over again. Notice how he does not once mention if the "hoe" he is ravaging has gotten any pleasure from the sexual act the two are engaging in. This should be an obvious warning to any women interested in Juvenile, that he does not care about the needs of a woman.

Them titties sitting nice, yeah
I wanna bite, yeah

A compliment, so to speak, to the girl's breasts, but it is cancelled out when he says he wants to eat them.

I could fuck you right, yeah
All night, yeah

Alluding to the fact that he can last all night.

Wanna bring it to my house, yeah
On the couch, yeah

Refering to the girl as "it", he says he wants to bring her home and continue having sex with her on his couch. The girl has not consented to any of this, and he continues to look at this girl as an it - an object.

Knock the pussy out, yeah
Get them out, yeah

Here he adopts the "fuck 'em and leave 'em" attitude that is so prominent in the hip-hop culture nowadays. Also, take in the fact that he now refers to the girl as "pussy".

I wanna see these hoes, yeah
Bend it low, yeah

After having sex with one "hoe", he continues onto the next. At this point it is obvious that Juvenile is telling blatant lies as he has spent the entire night with the previous "hoe", yet can still continue having sexual intercourse with more "hoes".

Let me run it in the hole, yeah
Let me know, yeah

... More graphic terminology from the master of tact.

(Chorus)

(Manny Fresh)
I know you can't stand it
Big Bandit

Manny Fresh refers to his genitals as "Big Bandit", perhaps doing so to impress Juvenile, his sexually superior leader.

Done landed
See the draws handed
We can go get it y'all
Gang split it y'all

His "draws" have already been removed and he is going in for more ravenous sex.

Put the bitch on the wall and I hit it y'all

Following the example set forth by Juvenile, Manny also treats his "bitch" as an object and symbolically "mounts" her on the wall, like some poor work of Van Gough.

I'm looking kind of lonely
I'm feeling horny

Manny reveals his method of getting "bitches" - He acts lonely and lets the "bitches" come to him, and then engages in acts of a sexual nature with them.

Put the dick in the middle like Monee
Big, thick plumber chick
And a Hummer chick
Beat the dick like a motherfucking drummer chick

The previous four lines are more graphic than any explanations done by Juvenile, yet do not share his lack of poetic use of language. He continues to demean women.

Cinch that putty-cat
Look at that

One could assume that by now Juvenile and his "nigga's" are thoroughly intoxicated or under the influence of one or more drugs, therefore they find humor in "cinching" a "putty-cat".

I love a fucking hoody-rat
That's a fact

Perhaps this "putty-cat" was running away from this gang of thugs, but was unable to because of her "hoody-rat" so-called "ghetto booty".

You'se a motherfucking get it girl
Quit it girl
I'm the nigga, the nigga, nigga
The hit it girl

Manny continues the trend of self gratification and calls himself "the nigga", entailing that he is all-powerful and the "hoes" are subservient to him.

(Chorus)

(Lil Wayne)
Na, na, na, na, na
After you back it up, then stop
Then wha-wha-what
Dro-drop it like it's hot
Now after you back it up, then stop
Now, wha-wha-wha-what
Drop it like it's hot
Now drop It like it's hot
Drop it like it's hot
C-M-P make you drop it like it's hot
Drop it like it's hot
Dro-drop it like it's hot
Drop it like it's hot
Dro-drop it like it's hot
Ha

Understanding the previous stanza requires one to travel into the mind and memories of Lil' Wayne. As a child Wayne was abused. His father would place hot coals into his hands and force Wayne to perform various sexual acts with only his mouth. As a result of this abuse Wayne now associates a burning sensation in his palms with sensations of any sexual origin. This explains the constant repetition of the phrase "Drop it like it's hot". In his delusional mind, he believes the girl, who is performing oral sex on Wayne, is actually holding these hot coals from his memories, however Wayne does not want to be like his abusive father, and asks the girl to drop the hot coals. This last shred of humanity left in Wayne would indicate that Juvenile and Manny Fresh must share equal if not worse experiences from their childhoods, to justify their acts of sexual misconduct and profligacy.
